CHAPTER

SIX

My Dearest Tyler,

I know we’ve had this discussion before. I know where you stand, and I know why you stand there. Truth be told, if our positions were reversed, I’d probably be every bit as upset with you as you get with me. The risks we take out here, no matter why we take them, can get pretty insane. So the fact that we do them for trinkets and historical footnotes the rest of mankind has forgotten about makes it all the more questionable. Perhaps as questionable as any other mercenary job, really.

But, of course, if I hadn’t chosen this line of work, we’d probably never have met in the first place. You have to give me that, at least!

With that said, I think I must finally admit that there are limits, even for me. I’ve seen savage locals, noble intrigue, and beasts of all sizes scarier than the works of humanity’s greatest horror writers. I’ve visited worlds and shipwrecks from the Axumite Providence to the Outworlds Wastes. I’ve been sued, shot, stabbed, assaulted, arrested, poisoned, plagued, and propositioned more times than I care to remember.

But after Jardine, I don’t think I can do this anymore.

There’s just a point where the thrill of discovery pales in comparison to its costs, and after what I saw here… Well, maybe it’s just time I listened to you for a change.

Just promise me you won’t gloat too much about it when I get home, alright?
